After many months of shooting the film was finally in the can, and ready to be scored by Pheloung. He had 53 minutes of music to write, and wile he say's that "a music driven film like this is a composers dream," he was not oblivious to the fact that his work would weave through some of the greatest music ever created. "This couldn't be a normal score," he explained. "My music had to tell the story of the emotional relationship between the Du Pré sisters, but the film would have been destroyed by over sentimentality. I tried very hard to give meaning to every note, while steering away from the obvious."

Pheloung used thematic references to the Elgar and the other cello works included in the film. His main theme based on "The Holiday Song," a childhood favourite in the Du Pré household. Originally thought to be by Mozart, it was later discovered to be the work of Fries, a composer of the Manhelm school.

For every one involved, creating 'Hilary & Jackie' was a tribute to Jacqueline du Pré. Director Anand Tucker concluded, "She has been an inspiration of mine since I first bought a recording of the Elgar at the age of 17. It is my hope that this film will help bring audiences closer to her music."

HILARY AND JACKIE celebrates the extraordinary life of the unrestrained musical genius Jacqueline du Pre, and the highly emotional and volatile relationship with her sister Hilary, who gave her everything. Two little girls, Hilary and Jackie du Pre, are inseparable, sharing their own special world of music and laughter. At first Hilary, the elder sister, is the star musician but when Jackie reaches the tender age of nine, her extraordinary gift as a cellist takes the world by storm. As the sisters grow up, they grow apart. When Jackie disappears on international tours, the only contact for the family is the dirty laundry she sends back. When Hilary announces her marriage to Kiffer a talented young conductor, Jackie responds by announcing her own engagement to the renowned pianist and conductor, Daniel Barenboim. The world celebrates Jackie's fairy tale love story. But gradually she senses that something is happening to her. Constantly tired, she fears she is losing her mind. One day, desperate for reassurance, Jackie arrives unexpectedly at the remote farmhouse where Hilary and Kiffer live with their children. Despite their attempts to help, Jackie feels rejected by them. Back playing on tour, she cannot feel her fingers. She can hear the music, but cannot play it...
